Fast fashion super store, H&M has been CANCELLED after featuring an advertisement with a black boy wearing "Coolest Monkey In the Jungle" hoodie. The two other hoodies from the collection featured white boys as "Jungle Survival Experts." The message is CLEAR AS DAY. Young black boys are rarely seen as children, and often targeted by the media, in a quest to continue the despicable rhetoric that has endangered and victimized them in society for hundreds of years.
The hoodie, made available online at H&M'S United Kingdom store left social media in dismay. H&M, the Swedish brand apologized this morning for their insensitive, ignorant association of a black model and a hateful stereotype.
The Stockholm headquarters released this message this morning, "This image has now been removed from all H&M channels and we apologise to anyone this may have offended."
But we are still curious as to how this photo bipassed the boy's parents as well as the H&M marketing team. The lack of culture sensitivity is alarming and disappointing. Time and time again we witness the racist agenda large corporation's like H&M, Urban Outfitters, and Tommy Hilfilger display against persons of color.
To make matters worse, the photo of the boy was replaced with a basic photo of the hoodie.
These repeated offenses by corporations bring into question why we don't continually support local, smaller, and quite frankly, cooler businesses. Invest your money in people who don't see you as the weakest link, an animal, or a target rather those who see you for you and respects the money you spend. Transactions with local companies and black owned businesses is money well spent.
If you absolutely must by a hoodie , stop into Creative Era and purchase clothing and accessories that match your fly!
