His Mom was a teacher and often they would find students would doodle Anime characters on their desks. JJ often found himself admiring graffiti on trains, etc. Despite the lack of formal art training as a youth, in the Fall of 2019 JJ decided to explore art; It was his first time picking up a paint brush. Since then, his paintings have caught the attention of art enthusiasts and critics alike, and he gained a reputation for his unique style and ability to capture the essence of his Gullah Geechee culture.

JJ Pinckney was recently showcasing his work at The Ecstatic Mag Birds In the Hand event. In his Ecstatic Magazine Volume 2 article entitled, “The Children Shall Inherit the Earth” JJ shares that “Painting is problem solving 101. ” JJ never was interested in art as a child, but as he grew in his manhood he felt inspired by other artists and wanted to emulate what he was seeing. He identified that when trying to progress and practice artistic principles you have to figure out how to get to the desired intention. “That intention can be pulled out at any movement.”

As the only visual artist in his family, JJ likes conversations on cultural advancement through art and storytelling. His family have played the role of living historians and helped JJ find an interconnection between his art and his history.
